Facebook Stories, Spacewalks, and Man-Eating Spiders, All This & More In The Weekly Spread!

This week, Peggy Whitson floated out of the International Space Station and set the record for the most experienced female spacewalker. A veteran of two earlier space station visits, she surpassed the previous record with a spacewalk time of 53 hours and 22 minutes. NASA is also in the process of establishing a port on the station to accommodate commercial ships being built by Boeing and SpaceX. Keep it up Dr. Whitson! We salute you down here on the blue marble.

What started on Instagram has moved to it’s parent; Facebook is releasing its own stories feature to compete with Snapchat’s continued rise in fame. The stories feature has been rolled out across Facebook’s suite of projects including WhatsApp and Messenger alongside Instagram. Like it’s Snapchat inspiration, Facebook stories will allow users to add filters and lenses to their postings. No word yet on how brands can take advantage of this latest feature, although with the continued growth of Facebook videos, there’s no doubt plenty of marketers are ready to test this new feature.

Buzzfeed is under some fire; Aleksej Gubarev, a Russian tech executive, and his companies are suing the publisher for casting his name alongside a dossier they published outlining some of Trump’s ties to Russia. While the story is interesting, the title of the motion deserves it’s own special award. The title reads: "SIX WAYS BUZZFEED HAS MISLED THE COURT (NUMBER TWO WILL AMAZE YOU) ... AND A PICTURE OF A KITTEN!" Whether or not you agree the suit is warranted, you have to give it to Gubarev’s prosecutors on this one. Tip of the hat.

Now, for a truly terrifying hypothetical: scientists say that spiders could theoretically eat every human on the planet in just one year. The surveyors found spiders in nearly 100 percent of homes in North Carolina, and put the weight of the world’s spider population at more than 478 Titanics. In continuing this nightmarish thought experiment, they put the weight of the prey that spiders collectively consume in a year somewhere between 400 million and 800 million tons. The weight of all adult humans on earth is only 287 million tons. So, basically, the spiders could eat us all and still be hungry for dinner. Forget about preparing for the zombie apocalypse, spiders could be the demise of the human race.

RIP Club Penguin, but welcome the new Club Penguin Island! While most Gen Xers reading this may only have a vague awareness of Club Penguin, the Millennials out there are no doubt feeling the tingle of sweet, sweet nostalgia. While Club Penguin is no more, the new Club Penguin Island retains the legacy of one of the first social media games by adding 3D design and a cheaper monthly subscription. While perhaps Club Penguin is a thing of the past, we may never forget our dancing penguin friends, and adaptations such as the TV program “We Wish You A Merry Walrus”.

Meanwhile, in another loss of favorite childhood items, Crayola has just killed off one of the colors in it’s Crayola 24-pack. We must all say goodbye to “Dandelion”, who we’re sure did nothing to deserve being cast aside so thoughtlessly. Fear not though, we are not doomed to a life of 23-packs, Crayola is announcing its newest addition to the classic pack on Friday via Facebook Live. Our bet, another version of yellow. Who’s got the odds?

Speaking of considering your inner child (we seem to have a theme going!) - are you tired of the never-ending work grind, or of sending out all those meticulously crafted cover letters and resumes? Longing for the days when all you had to worry about was building your newest Lego set? Well, it’s your lucky day! Legoland in Windsor, UK has just posted a job opening for a ‘Lego Model Designer’. While the position may require a bit more experience than being well versed in building and re-building your Harry Potter Lego set, this does sound like a pretty sweet gig.

It seems like we’ve been seeing a lot of statues pop up lately, from the pre-Oscars Jesus Kanye icon to the Wall Street’s ‘Fearless Girl’. This latest statue is rather an unfortunate likeness, and has become an unlucky victim of internet mockery. Unveiled Wednesday at the now-named Aeroporto Cristiano Ronaldo, the statue of said Portuguese footballer may not win any awards for ‘best likeness’. In defense of his art, creator Emmanuel Santos has retorted that not even Jesus, or the early Greeks and Romans could please everybody. Strong words there Santos, but I’m sure even Jesus has to agree with this one.

New in the entertainment biz, the teaser-trailer for Game of Thrones Season 7 has people on the edge of their seats with plenty of questions. The chilling 90 seconds feature some key characters walking slowly towards a throne, and some wild speculations include significance of the song in the background to possible alliances and seizures of thrones. Finally, Winter Is Here.

Also, the new trailer for the remake of the 1990 horror film ‘It’ looks just as terrifying as the original, if not more so. Sleep is overrated after all.

And, to help you start gearing up for April Fool’s Day, here are some prank ideas that will really get the best of your family and friends.
